General information

Grow Grow Grow
Uncle Matt’s Farm, Oughterard is growing in more ways than one. Aside from the all the wonderful vegetables and fruit being grown on the farm, Padhraig and Catriona have just opened their Farm Shop – a quaint stone shed transformed into a rustic shop.

Saturdays 11 – 3. Phone (087) 2113764 to order your box of veg or call to the market on Fridays.

We also do home delivery so you can give us a call when you pick what would like from the list of veg on facebook and we can deliver it to your door!!

In just a year and a half they have achieved an amazing amount of work and development – showing that it is possible even in these challenging times to make a success of their business.
Figures show a substantial increase in turnover from last year, which would not have been possible without the support of their very loyal customers, who either buy at the market on Tuesdays and Fridays, have boxes delivered to their door or who call to the shop on Thursdays and Saturdays.
An operation this size would not be possible without the help of Padhraig’s nephew James Harry and the young people who visit the farm from different countries around the world, France, Canada, America and at present Benedict and Sandrine from Belgium are keeping the weeds at bay and busy harvesting.
Why Uncle Matt’s? Padhraig’s uncle Matt lived and worked on this farm all his life. Padhraig’s father died when he was six years of age and Matt became like a father to Padhraig and his siblings. Many happy summer days were spent with Uncle Matt on the farm, he was a kind quiet gentleman and Padhraig believes and feels that the farm still holds his lovely presence.
Over 20 different vegetables are grown including Padhraig’s famous potatoes, onion, cabbage, kale, broccoli, carrots, beetroot, leeks, salads leaves, brussel sprouts, courgette, tomatoe, cucumber, peppers, butternut squash, runner beans, spinach, cauliflower, basil, rhubarb, fruit - raspberries, worcesterberry, tayberry, sylvan berry, gooseberry, blackcurrant, redcurrants and apples. They also have eggs, jams, relishes, pesto and chutneys all made from produce on the farm. Some beautiful patchwork pieces are also available to purchase at the Farm shop made by local woman Linda of ‘Rags for Linda’ .
Padhraig decided to turn his hobby and love of growing into a business. He completed a year long training course in organic horticulture with Jim Cronin in Co. Clare . He is passionate about growing and believes that the care and respect shown from the sowing of the seed to the harvesting of the crop is present in the energy, and taste of the food. Padhraig believes that for optimum health of plant and human we need to work using traditional farming methods ie. chemical free, farmyard manures and good crop rotation.
Going forward they hope to refine their production techniques to make it more efficient and to increase the variety already being offered. In 2012 they will be opening their Farm walks, a short one and one lasting an hour and a half incorporating the pond, wood and views of the old Clifden railway line.
Padhraig and Catriona are people with vision, passion and a great positive outlook focusing on all the possibities Uncle Matt’s legacy has given them - Work from what you have is their philosophy .
Farm shop open Thursdays 10 – 7pm and Saturdays 10 – 3. Phone (087) 2113764 to order your box of veg or call to the market on Tuesdays or Fridays.
